    5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic., February 2, 2012
This review is from: Weeping Willow Tree - Salix babylonica - 7 to 9+ inches
Really, this is a great tree, and a fantastic piece, I do look at it like a piece of art for this review. I don't know but the roots look and feel air layered, in the dirt, very delicate, but hardy feel to them in the dirt ball, which is great for any roots that might be starting off the trunk. I haven't seen them inside the dirt and am not going to, no peeking, not yet, it might kill these trees, well mine anyway is like this. Either way it is a thriving plant and as advertised and such a fantastic price, irresistible. Really great shipping time. I am anticipating that it will thrive nicely. Thanks. It is a lot of fun to have around. Color indicates it might need some tlc, but green enough not be concerned, looks hydrophonic babied quite a bit. If you were looking to adopt a tree, this is not a bad place to notice. This should be enough info, since comments really are about the product and not the opinion in terms of like or dislike. Keep in mind, I am just guessing, and am not... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars 9 out of 10 germinated in less than 2 weeks, August 13, 2008

These seeds were purchased at the beginning of August and were immediately sowed. Five were sowed in potting soil with slight acidity (as opposed to a seeding mixture) and the other five were sowed in cotton balls. The black seeds look like round beans approximately 6-7mm in diameter.

In 10 days (Aug 2 - Aug 12) I noticed that all of the seeds in the cotton balls had already started germinating which was surprising because the note that was included with the seeds indicated "MAY BE SLOW GERMINATING". I checked the ones in soil and all but one germinated. (That was probably my fault because I accidentally damaged the seed a week prior when I noticed that the husk was molding.) So of the ten seeds I received nine germinated, which is a surprising rate. I'm not an expert on Japanese Pagoda propagation so this may, in fact, be the normal success rate.

The husks of the seeds in the soil all developed mold while none developed in the cotton balls. The mold did... Read more

9/12 seeds germinated in first 2 weeks when seeded in Jiffy 5042 Windowsill Greenhouse 24-Plant Starter Kit With J7. I never expect a 100% germination rate, and these seeds are far more responsive than I am accustomed to. There's a certain satisfaction one derives from growing their own bonzai, and I was hoping for one or 2 trees. Looks like I'll have some to give as gifts in a couple years.

I planted 7 seeds in seeds starter soil and 3 in a wet paper towel in a plastic baggie (open). I nic'd half of the seeds shells before planting. The ones with the nic sprouted first and the first to germinate was the nic'd seed in the paper towel. It is now day 17 and 6 of the 10 seeds have sprouted and 4 of those are between 3 and 4 inches tall! I wish there was a link so I could post a pic!

5.0 out of 5 stars So far, so good ..., November 2, 2007
    10/31/07

I just received the (very small) olive tree in the mail in very good condition -- it was well-packed in excelsior & there was masking tape over the sides of the 4" pot to keep the soil intact. I planted the tree in an 8.5" ceramic pot with an 1/4" layer of sand over the top of the soil to protect the basil & Italian parsley seeds that I scattered around the base. Then I watered it & set it out on my back porch (southern exposure/full sun) & so now we'll see what happens ...

    11/27/07

Out of the 4 live plants that I ordered from this company (1 olive, 1 pineapple, 1 blueberry, 1 banana), the only one that's not suffering AT ALL from transplant shock is the olive tree. And, incredibly, the tree's 2 lone branches (8" & 12") are already starting to show new growth. (Technically it's fall here in sunny Southern California, but we're still having quite warm days -- 70 to 90 degrees F.) So far, so good!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hirt's--a trustworthy seller (Olive tree), May 31, 2009
    By
This review is from: Olive Tree - Tree of Peace - Olea europaea - 4" POT
The olive tree I received was also quite small (as to be expected for the price). I am not exactly certain how I am going to train this tree because there are two equally-sized tiny branches on a kind of crooked base. Also, it is really taking a long time to get going, but hopefully it will finally take root and take off. Quality product, but just small and taking its time acclimating.

Having sad this, however, I must say that I have ordered numerous plants from Hirt's over the last two-three years and have always been pleased with their timeliness and product.

I ordered three olive plants, and when they were shipped, such care was taken with the packaging. no dirt was spilled, the plants had been watered but no water leaked. Very impressed with how it arrived.
