Coral Bark Maple, Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku'. It is also known as 'Sen Kaki'. The famous Coral Bark Maple displays a stunning coral tone on its twigs in the winter, making a cheerful display in an otherwise dreary landscape. The coral red contrasts wonderfully against snow, sky, or grass. The delicate leaves are light green during the growing season and turn a wide range of bright yellow, pink, red and sometimes whitish pink with red veins in Autumn. Quite a display! This is a rare horticultural gem that will add distinction to any landscape! Ideal as a specimen, a foundation for a large building, or even a container plant, and excellent for bonsai. Requires partial shade with well drained soil. A gorgeous upright shrubby tree!

Not sure what 'year' grafts I bought? 2-year? 3-year? I know they weren't the smallest/youngest they offered, nor were they the largest/oldest offered. But I can definitely say that these trees were larger than what most online nurseries send you (height-wise anyway), very healthy, and packaged securely. Still small, but larger than you'd expect from mail order.Both trees arrived packed together in one box, each 'staked' to prevent breakage and to aid in keeping the tree upright when planted, each in its own small plastic planter filled with soil, the plastic containers then wrapped in cellophane. So no 'bare root' trees that you have to get ulcers over if you can't plant them immediately upon arrival. My only complaint was that my mailman put the box inside a door I never use, but that wasn't this company's fault, and luckily I discovered them and they survived the temporary neglect. I highly... This variety of Coral Bark is "Beni Kawa", which is a newer and improved version of the "Sango Kaku"- the variety you've most likely seen at a local nursery. If you have seen an older Sango Kaku then you will notice the older 3-4 year old bark starts to turns green. With this variety of the Beni Kawa the bark is a more intense red color. The leaves are also more of a lime green and have more red. The bark also stays more red as the plant ages. This is a fast growing maple (for the first few years). The more shade, the more intense the red will be.And this is a fantastic company to buy from. If you love Jap Maples, then you should definitely buy one of these! This was a very healthy plant that was well branched and stood all of 36" tall. I ordered one of these and one of the Purple Ghost.
