Giant Zanzibar Castor Bean 7 Seeds -Ricinus- Green Leaf

Product Description

THE CASTOR BEAN is a shrub-like plant with large, long-stemmed leaves that are lobed like fingers. Its spiny, clustered seed pods contain white, bean-like seeds (Botanically speaking, it isn't a true bean, but a Spurge), which typically bear attractive markings in various colours. The plant is native to tropical Africa, but it is grown commercially in California and has become naturalized throughout the southern United States. In northern areas, it is often cultivated, in the warmer months, as an ornamental annual in gardens, providing local gardeners with a castor of thousands....

Giant Zanzibar is a larger variety than common castor bean with more conspicuous veining on the leaves. This is a fast growing plant with huge, palmate, tropical-looking leaves up to three feet across. In tropical areas Castor Beans are perennial. This variety can grow 20 feet tall.

POISON LOCATION: Seeds, bark & leaves are all somewhat toxic, but the greatest concentration of the toxin occurs in the seeds & their pods. If you grow Castor Beans in your garden and you have children it is safest to remove & destroy the seed pods before they mature.
POISON TYPE: Ricin, a poisonous protein, one of a group known as plant lectins. In the right amount & concentration, Ricin is said to be one of the most toxic natural poisons in the world. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of more complex proteins in the intestinal wall, which in turn causes digestive distress. Castor Beans are traditionally cultivated as a basis of laxatives such as castor oil, which is also used as an ingredient of industrial lubricants, soaps, & varnishes
My Grandmother use to plant one Castor Bean Plant near the garden to keep deer away!

Thanks to HIRTS. I've grown regular castor bean plants for years. In 2009 I ordered Zanzibar castor seeds from HIRTS. I soon learned this type of castor is the giant of giants! It is now dec 15 2009...and they are at least 20 feet high! Two of my 8 are now towering above the roof of my ranch style home. The winter frost has killed a few of the tire sized leaves, but the plants just easily replace them. They are full of huge bean pods! Every time I stand among them I feel transported to a Hollywood set for the Jurassic Park movies. They look so unreal, so strange and otherworldly! On my little side street I actually see people stop their cars just to stare at them. I used no fertilizer or plant food on them, and now they are so gargantuan I laugh out loud just looking at them. I love them like pets, and if it doesn't rain for five days straight I hose my babies down for an hour of so. I know as the temperatures continue to dip I will wake up one morning and see my friends killed... Read more

A week after I received and planed the seeds all eleven had sprouted... Two weeks later I transplanted them to my yard. At five weeks all eleven of the plants are over a foot tall. I live in Orlando, Florida and I wanted some shade along the southwest section of my home, and I needed a plant that would not crash through my roof during a hurricane; these appear as if they will help keep down the internal temperature of my home, while looking very jurassic cool:)

I bought these seeds, and planted them the day they arrived. They are a very fast growing plant, much faster than I anticipated. Very nice colors, all in all, a great plant.
